Our 'ROUX ARDENNAIS' sheep
We rear ‘roux ardennais’ sheep, an ancestral local breed that was on the brink of extinction several years ago. Physically, the “roux ardennais” have red heads and legs, while the rest of their body is covered in beige wool.
Why choose this breed?
Highly resistant to parasites and disease, the “roux ardennais” are perfectly suited to harsh climatic conditions. So it can spend the winter outdoors without any problems.
Moreover, the “roux ardennais” feeds on grass (hay in winter when it is scarcer) but also on nettles (dried at the end of the season) or brambles, making it a very good “pasture maintainer”.
Finally, the “roux ardennais” lambs produce lean meat of excellent quality and exceptional flavour.
IN COMPANY WITH OUR 'COUCOU de MALINES' CHIKENS
Our sheep also act as guardians for our ‘Coucou de Malines’ chickens. Also of Belgian breed, they live with sheep, which keep foxes, weasels and other predators away. This method is not 100% safe, but it has proved highly effective on farms in recent years.
Our hens provide delicious farm eggs, which we serve in breakfasts for guests in the vegetable garden hut.
A PARTNERSHIP TO OFFER YOU PREMIERE QUALITY 'COUCOU de MALINES' CHICKEN
The Coucou de Malines chicken is renowned for its exceptionally flavoursome meat. It is very popular with restaurateurs, but is also becoming increasingly popular with the general public.
Slow, low-temperature cooking produces a chicken that is both tender and juicy, with real flavour.
In order to be able to offer you these Coucou de Malines chickens on a regular basis, we have established a partnership with ‘La poule qui roule’, a farm located 15 km from our farm that complies with specifications to which we fully adhere.
The chickens mature in batches of no more than 200 maximum in a mobile henhouse set in the middle of the Condroz meadows. They grow for several months before ending up on your plate. They feed on organic grain, alfalfa from our farm and, of course, earthworms found in the soil.
